British Values

Promoting British Values

At Moulton CEVC Primary School, British Values are not taught as a standalone subject; they are woven throughout our curriculum, collective worship and the everyday life of our school. Rooted in our Christian vision and our core values of Individuality, Responsibility and Community, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to become thoughtful, compassionate and responsible citizens.

The Department for Education identifies the five fundamental British Values as:

  • Democracy

  • The Rule of Law

  • Individual Liberty

  • Mutual Respect

  • Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

These values are reflected in everything we do. We celebrate the uniqueness of every child and welcome families of all faiths and none. We are committed to providing an inclusive environment where everyone is treated with dignity, kindness and respect, ensuring that every member of our school community feels valued and able to flourish.

Democracy

Children are encouraged to have a voice and understand that their opinions matter. They experience democracy through pupil leadership opportunities, including our pupil committees, where children help to shape school life, organise events and lead initiatives that benefit the wider school community. Pupils are involved in decision-making, share their ideas confidently and learn that listening to the views of others is an important part of responsible leadership.

The Rule of Law

Children learn that rules help everyone to feel safe, respected and able to learn. Our behaviour curriculum promotes fairness, responsibility and accountability, helping pupils understand both their rights and their responsibilities. Visitors such as the police, fire service and other professionals reinforce the importance of keeping ourselves and others safe, while our curriculum encourages children to think carefully about justice, fairness and making good choices.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to become confident, independent learners who make thoughtful and responsible choices. Through our curriculum, PSHE, online safety education and wider enrichment opportunities, pupils develop the confidence to express their views respectfully, pursue their interests and take increasing responsibility for their own learning, wellbeing and behaviour.

Mutual Respect

Respect lies at the heart of our school community. Our Christian values, relationships and behaviour expectations encourage children to value one another, celebrate success and show kindness in both words and actions. Through collaborative learning, sport, pupil leadership, performances and everyday classroom experiences, children learn the importance of teamwork, empathy, resilience and supporting others.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We are proud to prepare our pupils for life in modern Britain and an increasingly diverse world. Our carefully planned Religious Education curriculum, collective worship and wider curriculum help children develop an understanding and appreciation of different faiths, cultures and beliefs.

One of the ways we do this is through the high-quality books we share with our pupils. Carefully chosen stories are read regularly in classrooms and collective worship, while our library continues to grow with books that celebrate different cultures, family backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. These stories encourage children to develop empathy, challenge stereotypes and appreciate the richness and diversity of the world around them.

Our programme of collective worship is thoughtfully planned to explore our Christian vision and values alongside local, national and global issues. Through reflection, discussion and prayer, pupils are encouraged to consider different viewpoints, respond to current events and think about how they can make a positive difference in their communities.

Educational visits, visitors to school, curriculum enrichment and our pupil leadership opportunities—including the Collective Worship Committee, Wellbeing Committee, Library Team and Junior Road Safety Officers—provide further opportunities for children to contribute to school life, develop respect for others and become active, responsible citizens.

By embedding British Values throughout every aspect of school life, we ensure that our pupils leave Moulton CEVC as confident, compassionate and respectful young people who are well prepared to thrive in secondary school and to make positive contributions to their local, national and global communities.
