Year 3
What a wonderfully warm week it has been, both in terms of weather and learning! Although the heat has made things a little more tiring than usual, the children have shown great resilience and enthusiasm. We encourage plenty of rest this weekend, as we have another exciting week of learning ahead.
Please could you send a named, reusable/large plastic bag to school with your child next week – ideally before Wednesday. We have lots of books and learning to send home that the children will love to share and celebrate with you!
Next week marks our final spelling test of the year, which will take place on Wednesday. Please support your child in practising their spellings over the weekend to help them finish the term on a high note.
This week, the children spent Monday and Tuesday afternoons visiting Year 4. They will enjoy a smooth transition next year, as they will be with the familiar and friendly faces of Mrs Chittock and Miss Rice. As Lower Key Stage 2 has many similarities to Year 3, we’re pleased to see how ready and excited the children are for this next step. They have made excellent progress this year - in both learning and behaviour - and we’re incredibly proud of them.
In English, children have been using the 5 Ws (When, Where, Who, What, and Why?) to plan their own imaginative Greek myths. They also completed a reading comprehension activity based on our class text, Beasts of Olympus, alongside their end-of-year assessments in reading, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
In Maths, we wrapped up our shape unit by drawing polygons and identifying 3-D shapes. We’ve now moved on to our final topic: Statistics, and have already started interpreting and drawing pictograms with growing confidence.
Due to the hot weather, PE was adapted to keep everyone cool and safe. Mrs Crook led a calming yoga session in our beautifully air-conditioned classroom, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
Our Music learning came to a fun-filled conclusion with an energetic session featuring glockenspiels, maracas, tambourines, and even some dragon dancing! In RE, the class began thoughtfully planning what would be needed for a Sikh langar, showing great curiosity and respect. Meanwhile, in French, although an unexpected air-conditioning issue meant we had to switch locations, the children had a delightful session revisiting numbers and enjoying a story-time session under the pergola - a lovely way to end the week.
Wishing you all a cool, calm and restful weekend.
Year 4
We've had a great, hot, not completely on timetable, fighting off wasps week, and have survived! We have absolutely melted today unless we have been in the classroom. I'm so pleased we have air conditioning!
Our learning this week;-
Maths - We have started a unit on Position and Direction and looking at points on a graph. With Mrs Harper the children were solving problems involving time, in particular calculating time durations.
English - We spent this week really getting to grasps with our text, we now know it with actions. Instead of a reading comprehension with Mrs Harper this week the children enjoyed watching the Year 5/6 play. I was sorry I missed it but have heard it was the best yet.
Computing - We were focusing on one of the strands of computational thinking: abstraction. They had to use this skill to design a certain type of school playground.
French - The children learnt the names for clothing.
RE - The children looked at how Sikhs put into practice their beliefs in equality by learning about a Langar, free kitchen.
We also enjoyed two afternoons of transition. The children returned absolutely buzzing about Year 5, they had a great time. They are very much looking forward to moving up.
Next week, the last time I checked it will still be hot at the beginning of the week, so keep up the sun cream, sun hats and water bottles. The children are allowed to fill up their bottles as many times as they need. The air conditioning is on in the classroom and at lunchtimes we make the air-conditioned rooms available for children to use if they want to.
PLEASE SEND IN A NAMED BAG next week, ready to put all their work in. Remember, they have been really busy and will have lots to bring home so please make it a good strong bag.
Thursday 17th July, after school, the PTA are selling Ice lollies (£1) and Sweet cones (£2) after school.
Have a lovely weekend, try to keep as cool as you can, try not to do too much and tire your children out as we have another week and two days to go!
Mrs Chittock and the Year 4 team.
Year 5
We've made it to the end of our penultimate full week in Y5. It has been a busy one!
This week, the children got to spend some time in Y6 with Mrs Gilmore. Many of them have already been assigned classroom jobs for September. Mrs Gilmore had a lovely time with Y5 and I know she is looking forward to September. Our week was dominated by final rehearsals and performances. It was great to see so many of you in the audience of 'Rock Bottom' this week. I hope you enjoyed the show despite the heat in the hall! The UKS2 are so proud of all the children for how they danced, sang, performed and adapted when things went wrong or when they gained a different part at very short notice! I fear I may be singing 'Spell on You' for the rest of my life!
The children completed their final end of year assessment - mathematical reasoning B. We've learnt lots over the course of our assessments - largely the importance of checking your answers carefully and how helpful it is getting an adult to read you the question if you get stuck! I'm sure these are lessons Y5 will take with them next year. It will help Mrs G out tremendously. In English, we have looked in depth at two of the characters in 'The Highwayman'. We wrote a character description of the highwayman, using ideas from the poem and our own inferences. We also created a character profile for Tim the Ostler - who we all feel is going to cause trouble in later sections! In DT, we had a go at building Warren truss bridges out of art straws. We will be testing them this morning to see which team has built the strongest bridge.
FYI - End of Year reports will be coming home on Monday, 14th July. If you find a large, white envelope in your child's bag on Monday - that's what it will be!
Have a super weekend,
Rex (AKA Miss Rutter), Mrs Marsh and Mrs Nichols
Year 6
What a fantastic week it’s been in Year 6!
First of all, a huge congratulations to the whole class on their incredible SATs results – we are so proud of all the effort, determination, and resilience they showed. Their achievements are a real credit to them and to the support of their families.
As if that wasn’t enough, they also highly entertained us with their brilliant performance of Rock Bottom. The energy, humour and confidence they brought to the stage were amazing – it’s safe to say we were all thoroughly impressed (and very amused- we continued to chuckle throughout every performance. Mrs Offley laughed throughout last night's performance and has emailed wonderful words of congratulations to the class)!
We’ve still managed to squeeze in some learning this week. In Computing, the children have been working on their programming and digital skills, while in RE, we’ve been exploring Humanist ceremonies, learning how these differ from religious celebrations. We also enjoyed some bonus PE on Monday, which was a great opportunity to burn off some energy and enjoy the sunshine.
Well done, Year 6 – you continue to make us proud!
Mrs Gilmore
