Year 3
At the end of a busy week, we look ahead to next week’s exciting highlight – our trip to Colchester Castle on Tuesday. The children are buzzing with anticipation! For the trip, please ensure your child brings:
- a packed lunch
- a coat
- a water bottle
Children should wear Moulton school uniform along with comfortable shoes (school shoes or dark trainers are perfect).
On Monday, please ensure you have provided the office with any medication (including for travel sickness) and the necessary permission.
Because our adventure is on Tuesday, I’ve nudged the spelling test to Thursday. I felt this would give everyone a little more time to practise, as the excitement of the trip might mean Wednesday isn’t the ideal day for testing.
In English, we’ve been immersed in kenning poems about Boudicca. The children had some imaginative ideas when planning, and they wrote their poems beautifully - I was really impressed by their vocabulary choices and presentation.
In maths, we’ve enjoyed the challenge of comparing, adding and subtracting lengths using metres, centimetres and millimetres. We’ve also been converting between units, tackling some tricky questions and conversions along the way – fantastic perseverance all round! Lots of children are making great progress with their times tables, and a few have asked to take home six times table practice. This is entirely optional and purely at the children’s request if they bring it home.
Our history learning has followed Boudicca as she united several tribes and wreaked havoc on Camulodunum, Londinium and Verulamium. The children wrote wonderfully evocative diary entries in role as Roman citizens of Camulodunum (modern-day Colchester) during the Celtic attack.
In computing, we explored Safer Internet Day, led by Mr Turner, with a focus on voice-activated devices. We’ve also got to grips with spreadsheets: creating records, adding fields, inputting data, and then experimenting with filtering and creating charts. I was very impressed with the children’s focus and the results they achieved.
The children also had a special music lesson with Mrs Shipp, which involved a dragon-making craft activity and rhythmic movement. In PE, Mrs Crook led the children through some careful balancing activities in gymnastics.
We ended the week on a slightly soggy note weather-wise, but Friday finished with smiles all around. Wishing you all a happy and restful weekend.

Year 4
What a wet week, I'm not sure whether to quack or wiggle my fins! We have managed to go out to play most of the time, so thank you for making sure your child has the appropriate clothing. It has been a slightly different week, not quite the normal routines, but we have managed to keep up the learning.
Our learning this week:
Maths – we have completed our fraction learning for now and the children rounded it off with an assessment so that I know where to go with them next. On Wednesday, the children learnt about quadrilaterals and what is it that makes a shape a quadrilateral.
English – We have continued with the text map and actions for our text. We have also been practising our descriptive language. On Wednesday, the children looked at a reading comprehension session about Sameera's Dance Shoes.
Topic – this week we looked at what causes an earthquake and how we know it is going to, or has, happened.
Computing - continuing with coding in Scratch.
Science - some practical experiments with sound this week.
Art – this week we looked at Henry Moore and his abstract sculptures, and we drew his famous reclining figure.
Music - continuing with composing music for the Japanese Cherry Blossom theme.
Online Safety – this week we spent Tuesday afternoon thinking about our use of digital technology and the internet, focusing on AI. We looked at what AI is. We discussed the fact that AI is not human and therefore cannot judge emotions, so doesn't know if something is kind or unkind. We then played a game of okay, not okay, and it depends on looking at different scenarios in which AI can be used. International Online Safety Day is on Tuesday 10th February. We celebrated it early.
Miss Murphy and I have been looking at the Easter production, and we will introduce the children to it next week so that anyone with a speaking part can have their lines to start practicing them over the half-term holiday. Our plan, though, is for Year 3 to be doing most of the talking, whilst Year 4 will be mostly acting with a small amount of speaking and plenty of singing. I know they can sing, and sing beautifully, as I heard them on the bus to and from West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village.
Next week:
Tuesday 10th - Pancake flipping.
Friday 13th - Reading Cafe.
Have a great weekend
Mrs Chittock and the Year 4 team
Year 5
We have been at Horstead activity centre for most of the week. Having lots of fun, getting a bit wet and making loads of great memories. Please ask us what we did, how many times we fell in the water and how the talent show went.
Year 6
We have also been at Horstead this week!! And we got a bit wet, had lots of fun, and made some memories too! Please ask us how we felt about being away, the rooms we slept in, and the food we ate. And, what we did for the talent show!!
