Year 3
We are incredibly proud of all the children for their narration and singing in the Year 3 and 4 Easter performances. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! The children gave it their all, so you may notice a few tired heads this weekend… I suspect the adults are feeling much the same. A well-earned rest all round! We look forward to welcoming some of you back on Monday for our reading café.
Another strong set of spelling results this week. Well done, everyone. Even more pleasing is how the children are learning to apply their spelling in their independent writing. They particularly impressed me with their editing skills while crafting their character descriptions of Hargl, a Stone Age girl. Alongside this, they’ve been exploring some spring-themed spelling, punctuation and grammar activities.
In maths, we are wrapping up our unit on capacity and volume, with just one lesson to go. The children have been measuring, comparing and converting between millilitres and litres with growing confidence. They’ve developed a solid understanding of reading scales and distinguishing between capacity and volume. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed teaching this unit.
In science, the children turned their attention to what seeds need to germinate successfully. They planned and set up their own investigations, testing variables such as air, water, sunlight, space and soil, while carefully keeping certain factors the same to ensure a fair test. We also discussed the importance of having a control - so we have something reliable to compare our results against. Some excellent scientific thinking on display!
Mrs Crook organised mini football matches, involving plenty of energy and teamwork. In PSHE, Miss Spinks introduced the children to budgeting and the importance of saving - valuable financial skills for life. Meanwhile, creativity took centre stage as the children storyboarded trailers for The Secret Garden. By the end of the week, they had transformed into budding directors, voiceover artists and camera operators, experimenting with different camera angles to bring their ideas to life. We have quite the production team in the making!
Have a great weekend!

Year 4
Well, didn't they do well!
I thought the children were fantastic in the play, and I am very proud of them all, though I would like to give a particular shout out to the children that were the trees - beautiful singing considering not all of them volunteered for singing and for Jesus, a boy who put himself well and truly out of his comfort zone and did it amazingly. Around all the nerves, excitement and then come-down of it all ending, we have been busy learning too.
In our learning this week;-
Maths - we have subtracted in short column as well as multiplied and on Wednesday the children were looking at the properties of 2D shapes.
English - we wrote up our invention story and started to look at cinquain poems. On Wednesday the children looked at a reading comprehension about woodland animals. We ended the week on a writing task about a deep sea diver.
Science - Continuing with their investigation into tooth decay the children set up an experiment in the classroom with eggs and they are watching the effect different liquids have upon the egg shell.
Topic - the children made an information poster about Volcanoes, how they are constructed, where they would be found, what causes an eruption, what happens during an eruption and the positives and negatives of living near the edges of tectonic plates.
AMAZING play performances!
Once again, thank you for your support for preparing for the play, the children were word perfect, dressed perfectly and were confident to take part, thank you.
Next week;-
Monday, 9:10 - Reading Cafe, I'm looking forward to seeing you there.
Tuesday - The children will be walking to church for our Easter Service, please keep an eye on the weather so that they are suitably dressed. Little tip though, regardless of how many warm sunny days we have, the church will still be cold!
Friday - End of Term
Year 5
In English this week, we have looked at a narrative poem. The title does slightly give the plot away, as it is called "Jim – who ran away from his nurse and was eaten by a lion." We answered some comprehension questions about the vocabulary and use of language and searched for poetic features. Today, we've had a closer look at relative clauses.
In Maths, we have calculated fractions of large amounts using our short division and multiplication skills. We've also worked out a whole number when only told a fraction of it. Today we have used our times table grid to help us find equivalent fractions.
In History this week, we looked at Howard Carter and his discovery of Tutankhamun's intact tomb. Carter's story is one of perseverance and ignoring the naysayers. We also designed our death masks which we will create next week. In Science, we looked at pollination, making sure to use lots of the precise, scientific terminology we learnt the week before. In RE, we looked at the 10 plagues as these were a major catalyst to the Jewish people being allowed to leave to Egypt. We then learnt about the festival of Passover and how Jewish people celebrate this.
In art, the children explored graffiti with chalk - they chalked the school logo on the playground. Apologies for the chalky clothes!
There is a lot happening next week!
On Monday, there is a reading café. We will finish our Scratch games and show them off to the school. On Tuesday, it's our Easter visit to the Church. On Thursday, we will make our Ancient Egyptian-style death masks.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Rutter, Mrs Grosvenor & Mrs Marsh
Year 6
This week, Year 6 have been working incredibly hard as we completed a series of mock SATs assessments. The children approached these with maturity and determination, and we are very proud of the effort they have shown.
In English, we have been exploring Macbeth and focusing on persuasive writing. The children wrote letters in role as Lady Macbeth, using powerful language and persuasive techniques to influence Macbeth’s actions. We were impressed by their use of ambitious vocabulary and their understanding of character.
In RE, we have been learning about the importance of Passover for people of the Jewish faith. The children explored the significance of the Seder plate and what each item represents, developing a deeper understanding of this important festival.
In Science, we carried out an investigation to explore the effect of exercise on pulse rate. The children measured their pulse before and after physical activity and discussed how and why the heart rate changes.
In Computing, we have been developing our programming skills by improving our falling object games. The children successfully created and used a variable to add a scoring system—fantastic problem-solving and logical thinking!
In Art, we took our creativity outdoors, designing and ‘graffitiing’ new school logos on the playground. The children showed great imagination and teamwork in their designs.
