Year 3
Year 3 have returned from the break in fantastic form (and rather chatty)! We’re absolutely delighted to begin our final term together.
Activity day was a real highlight for children and adults alike. The children impressed us all with their excellent behaviour, skills, and the thoughtful questions they asked throughout (I think we may even have taught the bird handlers and fire-making leaders a thing or two). Even more wonderful was the way they supported one another.
Next Wednesday, we are fortunate to have our trip to Audley End House and Gardens – I do hope everyone has signed up! Our weekly spelling test will move to Thursday 23rd April.
Our learning this week has included…
In English, we read from The Iron Man by Ted Hughes as a whole class, focusing on reading with expression and understanding the author’s language choices. The children answered questions about the text and continued to improve their handwriting as we raise expectations for the final term. They also planned a character description of Mary Lennox from The Secret Garden, choosing rich vocabulary to show her change into a curious, friendly and brave girl.
In Maths, we began our fractions unit, adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator and exploring how parts make a whole. We also practised finding fractions of amounts, such as 1/3 of 12.
Our Computing session was a highlight. The children logged onto laptops, moved files, and learned about computer networks. We even went on a “network walk” around school to spot components of our LAN - perhaps they can try this at home…
In Music, we started learning about ballads, listening carefully to identify their features. In Geography, we launched our local area topic, exploring settlements and the difference between urban and rural areas using Newmarket and Moulton. Mrs Crook led a super PE session!
Have a lovely weekend,

Year 4
Welcome back to the Summer term, our last term together. I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and that lots of Easter treats were consumed and lots of making memories with your families.
Monday was chatty and Tuesday was just amazing! We were all really impressed with how well the children listened to instructions, encouraged one another and for many of them, stepped outside of their comfort zone and took part in all the activities – ALL the activities! And of course, they really enjoyed themselves.
The children returned with a really positive attitude to their learning and have been working hard in class, our learning this week:
Maths – We have returned to our decimals and the children have been multiplying and dividing numbers, including decimals, by 10 and 100. On Wednesday they started a unit about time and they were looking at months of the year.
English – We have started to look at our new text based upon the book ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Balit. This week we have mainly been thinking about expanded noun phrases, so from a picture we identified and classified the nouns and then used some really interesting adjectives to describe the nouns. With Mrs Murray the children did a reading comprehension about Pompeii.
Topic – We started our new topic about Pompeii by recapping our knowledge around volcanoes by starting to write a newspaper article about a volcano erupting.
Science – The children were looking at animals including humans.
Computing – They finished their poster about their favourite animal using Word.
Music – The children have started a new topic about body percussion and using the rainforest as their focus.
Art/DT – Today the children finally got to channel their inner Henry Moore and create their own ‘reclining figure’ with clay. They are currently drying and will come home next week at some point.
We are all very excited about Monday and Tuesday and our trip to Burwell. It was great to see so many of you at the meeting on Monday afternoon. May I please reiterate involving your child with packing their bag so that they know what they have got packed. Stick to the kit list, it is only one night and they won’t need lots and lots of stuff. Just a little note about their indoor shoes, they must be safe for the children to be able to navigate a metal spiral staircase when wet (fire exit) without slipping.
Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday morning at Burwell House, Silver Street entrance.

Year 6
We have had a fantastic first week back, and it has been wonderful to see the children return with such enthusiasm and positivity.
On Tuesday, we enjoyed a brilliant day, filled with exciting activities, including climbing, bird handling and even axe throwing! The children demonstrated great courage, teamwork and resilience throughout the day, and it was lovely to see them supporting one another and trying new experiences.
In maths, we have continued our work on algebra, building confidence in forming and solving equations. The children are developing a strong understanding of how algebra can be used to represent problems clearly.
In English, we have begun our new class text, Chinese Cinderella. We have started to explore character development, thinking carefully about how characters are presented and how their actions and experiences shape who they are. Alongside this, we have looked at the traditional story of Yeh Shen and explored the ancient custom of foot binding, helping to deepen our understanding of the context of the novel.
In history, we have been learning about the dissolution of the monasteries, focusing on who benefited and who lost out as a result of Henry VIII’s decisions. The children engaged thoughtfully with this, considering different perspectives.
In PSHE, we discussed top tips for making friends at secondary school, which led to some very mature conversations about online behaviour and how to stay safe and respectful in digital spaces.
In RE, we have been learning about Shabbat, exploring the important rituals and what they mean for people of the Jewish faith.
Home Learning:
This weekend’s task is ‘working backwards’, practising inverse operations in maths to help strengthen problem-solving skills.
Have a wonderful weekend,
The Year 6 Team
