A Message from Mrs Shipp

We started the week with a collective worship linked to our school value of stewardship. We explored the important role that bees play in food production and reflected on how, despite being very small creatures, they make a huge impact on our world. We also discussed the ways in which we can care for the environment and help create habitats where bees can thrive. There is always a marked increase in the number of children wanting to make contributions in animal-themed assemblies – it is lovely to see!  On Wednesday, Mrs Gilmore led a World Cup-themed assembly, exploring the history of the tournament. I am very much looking forward to watching plenty of football over the coming weeks, although some of the kick-off times are certainly testing my commitment to the sport!

We are very much looking forward to Sports Day next Wednesday. A plea from me: wherever possible, please consider sharing transport with other families to help reduce parking congestion. Please do not park on Benefield Way or in any location that obstructs the view of other road users. We are keen to avoid complaints from neighbours this year and would appreciate everyone's cooperation. The carrot wash will be available for additional parking. Please keep your fingers crossed for perfect weather! Should we experience extreme heat, we will ensure that the air-conditioned hall is available for anyone needing some shade or a break from the sun. We will have portable toilets available outside for you to use. If possible, please use these facilities rather than entering the school building. It would be really helpful if families could re-read the Sports Day information letter before Wednesday to ensure that everyone is clear on arrangements for the day.

On Sports Day, our kitchen team will be selling homemade refreshments from the kitchen door from 9.00am onwards, so do bring some change with you if you would like to treat yourself.

A reminder that we now offer a pasta option as our fourth menu choice. If your child would like to select this option, please continue to sign up in the usual way via the website. The kitchen team have asked me to remind families that meal choices should be submitted by Friday morning to help with ordering and preparation. I would like to gather some feedback from families about how the menu sign-up process is working. Please look out for a short survey in the coming days.

You may have seen recent reports on the news that government sports funding is coming to an end. This is really disappointing. The funding has enabled us to enhance pupils' access to free sports clubs, maintain and replace equipment, support sporting trips and contribute towards the recent activity day. It has made a genuine difference to the opportunities we are able to provide for children. As we begin planning for next year, we are reviewing how sports clubs will operate in the future. We would greatly appreciate your views, particularly regarding the cost of after-school sports clubs. Please take a few moments to complete this survey, so that we can take your feedback into account when making decisions.

Thank you for your continued support - have a lovely weekend!

Learning Updates

Year 1: Here

Year 2: Here

2nd, 3rd & 4th choice School Dinners

Every child in school now has a QR code sticker on their reading record. This is to make the sign-up process easy for all to use.  The link will be removed from the website early each FRIDAY morning. If you still need the link, it is : Here

Year 3

The year 3 learning update will be sent out early next week.

Year 4

It's been a bit of a wet week!  And because of this there have been a few indoor playtimes so the children have not been able to run off energy.  It is looking as if next week will be better weather wise but there is still risk of rain as well as sunshine so please ensure your child has a raincoat and a sunhat, otherwise they will have to sit in a pergola at playtimes.

Our learning this week;-

Maths - We have started a unit on Money.  We have looked at the correct way of writing money when combining pounds and pence, added and subtracted with money.  On Wednesday they continued with time and converting from the 24 hour clock.

English - We started our new text type, explanation.  We have begun to look at our focus piece of text about the construction of the Titanic.  On Wednesday the children had a reading comprehension about poems.

Topic - We looked at the timeline of events of the sinking of the Titanic, how such a large ship over such a small amount of time sank with only 705 of the 2223 people aboard surviving.

RE - We looked at the humanists 'Golden Rule' and looked at how it connected in to the religions that we have already looked at.  The children then designed a t-shirt that carried a picture or slogan to remind people of 'The Golden Rule.'

Science - Observations of the change of state experiment.

PHSE - This week the children looked at and discussed the different emotions/feelings they had for different people from family to strangers.

DT - We started our project of making a slingshot car.  First we looked at the evolution of the car and it's importance in our lives and then the children designed their car.

I have pleaded with the children in the class that are not achieving 'Star Reader' to consider their friends.  We have a regular group of children that are not reading, I have made them aware of how unfair this is on the children that are reading regularly.  Please encourage your child to read 6 times this week so that we can boost our numbers and maybe get Bookster Bear for the class. If nothing else, please be considerate to the other children in the class.

Dates for the Diary;-

Wednesday 17th June – Sports Day

Thursday 18th June -  Marvellous Men pop up shop

Friday 26th June – Summer fair

Have a lovely weekend

Year 5

It's been quite the week!

On Monday, we had our session at Newmarket Academy. The children engaged brilliantly in both sessions. They investigated why bath bombs fizz in science and discussed which parts of our character and experiences are most important in forming our identities.

On Tuesday, we completed a writing assessment. The task was to write a explanation text for Y4 about what it is like in Y5. The children had lots of ideas about what to include (not sure if that's reassuring or not.....) and structured their writing really well. Mrs Grosvenor enjoyed reading them - particularly the bits where we had been directly quoted! In our other English lessons this week, we completed the end of year grammar assessment wrote our formal letter of complaint about a bike.

In Maths this week, we have looked at 2D shapes, with a focus on being precise with mathematical terminology. We've sorted 2D shapes based on their properties and drew some quadrilaterals and detailed their parallel lines.

In History, we looked at which diseases the Victorians were suffering from. We discussed key symptoms and how the Victorians were attempting to treat cholera, typhoid, diphtheria and smallpox (not very successfully). A big thank you to those children who offered to be diseased Victorians for us to diagnose. You were all marvellous and being ill (and dramatically falling to the floor upon expiry). In Science, we used our knowledge of forces to explain some concept cartoons. It was great to see the children use their knowledge to work out who in the cartoon was right, who was wrong and why.

We had our first rehearsal for our end of year play this week. It was my first time hearing the songs and I must say lots of them are very catchy! We will have another rehearsal next week. I'm hoping those Y5s who volunteered to have lines will be 'off book' soon!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Rutter, Mrs Grosvenor & Mrs Marsh

Year 6

It has been another busy and productive week in Year 6, with lots of exciting learning taking place across the curriculum.

A highlight of the week has undoubtedly been our rehearsals for Wind in the Willows. The children have thrown themselves into learning lines, developing their characters and working together on stage. It is already shaping up brilliantly, and we are continually impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment and confidence that the children are showing. We cannot wait to share the finished production with you.

In English, we have continued reading Chinese Cinderella. As well as enjoying the story, the children have begun exploring some of the deeper themes presented within the novel, including family relationships, resilience, belonging and injustice. They have shown great maturity in discussing these ideas and considering how Adeline's experiences shape her character.

In maths, we have been revisiting some of the areas that children have found more challenging throughout the year. This week, we have focused on volume and calculating missing angles in increasingly complex reasoning and problem-solving questions. The children have worked hard to apply their knowledge and explain their mathematical thinking clearly.

In computing, children have been putting the finishing touches to their animations. Many have begun experimenting with adding music and sound effects to enhance their projects. We will be revisiting and refining this aspect of the work next week.

In RE, the children impressed us with some thoughtful and philosophical discussions centred around the question of how human beings find happiness. They explored a range of viewpoints and demonstrated excellent listening, reasoning and debating skills.

A reminder that Sports Day takes place next Wednesday. Please ensure that you have read the letter that was sent home. The day will follow a very similar format to last year, and we are all looking forward to the predicted sunshine!

Please also remember to return the Crucial Crew permission slip if you have not already done so.

Finally, there was great excitement in class this week as we launched our World Cup sweepstake. The children eagerly drew their teams and have already begun making predictions. We shall have to wait and see who comes out on top!

Have a wonderful weekend.

Nuala Gilmore
