A message from Mrs Shipp

In class collective worship, teachers shared Tilda tries again - a story about a character who overcomes adversity. On Wednesday, Reverend Chris spoke to the children about how Easter foods link to the Easter story. Today, I talked to the children about our new value, commitment. We looked at the commitment shown by Jessica Ennis-Hill, Pele, and Ed Sheeran. We looked at how each person committed to their goals, and watched a short video about each. (They can be found here: Jessica Ennis-Hill, Pele, Ed Sheeran.)

The Local Authority has asked that we share a link to a wraparound care survey. If you have a moment to give your thoughts, the survey can be found here.

On Monday, there will be no sensory circuits - Miss Spinks will be getting ready to join Y4, who are off on their residential trip to The Jarman Centre. Mrs Barker will lead Sensory Circuits as usual on Tuesday.

Our attendance last Friday was the lowest we have had for a while. Many children were absent due to their older siblings' schools having a day off, so they were on day trips and holidays. Some families were not aware that we returned to school on Friday. Please ensure that you check term dates carefully when booking holidays. We will try to alert you if we know that older siblings' schools have different holiday dates. We are still a Local Authority maintained school. Unlike academy trusts, we cannot set our own dates, so we are unable to coincide with secondary schools.

Y1 children are off to Lackford Lakes next Tuesday - keep your fingers crossed for good weather!

Y5 children had their first swimming session at Newmarket Leisure Centre today - they all did marvellously - well done to Y5!

Miss Murphy is part of the Snailwell team who are organising a dog show. Do support if you can - tickets can be purchased here.

We received our list of new Reception children this week. We are delighted to be welcoming many new families, as well as many younger siblings to our school.

Special mentions:

Well done and thank you to one of our Y2 pupils and her family who did a litter pick around their local area. A photo is below - look how much they collected! One of our Y6 pupils scaled six Wainwrights - a huge well done to him - that certainly showed commitment! I was really impressed with Bella (R), who showed great tenacity when building a tower on Monday lunchtime. Although it kept toppling over, she kept going, and managed to make it really tall. Well done to Charlie (Y2), who showed great editing skills in a reading lesson this afternoon. Thank you to Eleanor (Y3), who bought me a beautiful wooden boat from Kerala - very much appreciated.

I hope that you all have a lovely weekend - see you on Monday! (Y4 families, don't forget that you are dropping your Y4 child at the Jarman Centre on Monday)

2nd & 3rd choice School Dinners

Our 2nd and 3rd choice dinners are very popular with our children.  We have issued a link as shown below, to make the sign-up process easier for parents and carers.  For the 2nd & 3rd choice dinners please use this link: Here

Year 3

Please do check out the website for photographs of our trip to Audley End. We were very proud of the children’s impeccable behaviour, particularly as there were members of the public visiting the estate, and the vast number of questions they had, stretching the Year 3 adults and the guides in the house. Not to mention, the fun and enthusiastic attitudes they showed. What a lovely day!

In English, the children did a ‘cold task,’ writing to persuade the reader to visit their chosen location/venue. They also did a whole class read and answered questions based on a leaflet about Audley End, fitting in with our persuasive writing theme this half-term.

In maths, we have seen some super addition and subtraction of fractions and partitioning of ‘the whole.’ Geography saw them generating lots of ideas about why Newmarket is the perfect location for the horse racing industry.

In computing, the children took photographs from different angles and perspectives to be included in their iMovie book trailers. In RE they discussed what it means to be a king. Their next project began in DT with learning running stitch, and we completed calculations in French. What a busy, but positive, week!

Year 4

Our year 4 children have had a brilliant week, getting themselves ready for the residential trip next week.  Please do remember your child needs to be taken directly to the Jarman Centre on Monday morning.  We are hoping for some better weather than we've had this week!

Year 5

We all survived our first swimming session this week! The children have been split into swimming groups and will spend time building water confidence, perfecting strokes and aquatic breathing and working towards personal safety certificates. We will swim every Friday of this term, so keep remembering those swimming kits!

In Maths this week we have recapped finding equivalent fractions and learnt how to simplify fractions by finding the highest common factor. In English this week we have finished our learning about ‘Jim’ – the poem where a naughty boy gets eaten by a lion! The children had a go at writing their own cautionary tales in verse. Trying to match a rhyming structure with the right amount of syllables all while trying to make a point that sense is really rather tricky.

We have all been impressed with how hard they worked on this. In computing, we finished our (by now, rather epic) maze games. We have invited the rest of the school to come and play them next Tuesday. We’re not going to tell them that some levels are deliberately impossible as a test of their resilience!

Next Monday, Y4 are away, so we have nabbed their slot with the cricket coach! Please send your child in in their PE kit.

Have a super weekend – let’s hope the weather improves!

Miss Rutter, Mr Coldwell and Mrs Marsh

Year 6

Welcome back!

The year continues to pick up the pace as we look to SATs and transition.

In English this week, we have been planning and beginning to rewrite the narrative of Macbeth, and I am so excited to read these.

In maths, we have been revising shape, particularly focusing on symmetry, rotation and translation. We have also been focusing on revising, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions.

In science, the children learning about the different nutritional values in the foods they have been eating.

In PSHE, the children have been exploring philosophical questions about friendships and bullying - Miss Spinks was very impressed with the children's ability to discuss.

When are SATs 2024?

The KS2 SATs dates fall as usual in the second week in May, so SATs in 2024 will be administered from 13th to 16th May 2024.

  • Monday 13th May 2024: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (Grammar/Punctuation Test) – 45 minutes
  • Monday 13th May 2024: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar (Spelling Test) – 20 minutes
  • Tuesday 14th May 2024: Reading Paper (English) – 60 minutes
  • Wednesday 15th May 2024: Maths Paper 1 (Arithmetic) – 30 minutes
  • Wednesday 15th May 2024: Maths Paper 2 (Reasoning) – 40 minutes
  • Thursday 16th May 2024: Maths Paper 3 (Reasoning) – 40 minutes

Homework this week is for children to complete as much as they can and indeed want to (if using more time) of some shape, space and measure questions.

Have a super weekend.

Nuala Gilmore

Deputy Head

Cricket Coach

The cricket coach has been a great success with the children.  He will be here each Monday for the rest of this term.  Years 2,3 & 4 will need to be in their PE kit for their sessions.  This Monday, as the year 4 children are away, the year 5 class will have a cricket session instead.

Year 5 Swimming

The swimming lessons for our year 5 children started today, and will continue each Friday until the 12th July.

Please make sure your child has their swimming bag with them, and a swim hat.

Year 6 Wellbeing Team

One of our year 6 children has taken on the role of Wellbeing Lead in school.  She has drawn up some fabulous ideas to share with the school.  We are very proud of the time & effort she is putting into this role.
