A message from Mrs Shipp

It has been a shorter week, but there has been lots going on in school.  Most of us have spent the week thinking we are on the wrong day, due to the bank holiday!

Two lorries collided this morning, as a result of a blue car pulling out of the drop-off zone, into the path of the front lorry. The lorry drivers informed us that they both have dash cams, which they will submit to the relevant authorities. It was extremely fortunate that nobody was hurt, but this does serve as a stark reminder to be patient and observant when exiting the drop-off zone. I would recommend that vehicles turn left out of the drop-off zone.

Mrs. Gilmore led most of our Collective Worship this week. On Wednesday, she read the story, The Bear That Went To War, which was about VE day. On Friday, she talked to the children about Ascension. Angie, our cook, celebrated a special birthday yesterday. The children gave her a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday at the end of Celebration Assembly.  Freddie (Y4) did a beautiful job of leading the prayer today.  The hall will be in use as part of our SATs arrangements next week, so Collective Worship will take place in classrooms.

We wish our Y6 pupils the very best of luck with SATs next week. Y6 families, please familiarise yourselves with the timetable for the week, and times for children to be in school. I know we will feel very proud of them.

Sports Day will take place on Wednesday 3rd July this year - snacks and drinks will be available on the day. Information and safety arrangements will be shared nearer the time.

Don't forget the Christian Aid coffee morning on Saturday 18th May, 10am - 12pm at Gazeley Church. If you are able to pop in and support this event, we would love to see you. If you are short on time, you could dash in and buy some cakes for teatime, or you could make a cash donation in school - envelopes are in the office.

It would be really helpful if you could talk through the weekly dinner menu with your child. Sometimes, children do not know if they are signed up for second choice, which can cause upset when they are served something they were not expecting. Many thanks.

It's getting nearer to hat wearing season! Please keep an eye out for hot weather and send your child in with a hat when needed. Later in the term, we will insist on hats being worn if children want to play in the sun.

Special Mentions...

One of our Y6 boys went competed in Hyrox Youngstars. He was awarded a hyrox 1st flag which is much coveted by competitors - well done! (Photo below) One of our Y4 girls and some friends raised over £85 for Great Ormond Street by holding a community cake sale - I felt really proud when I found out about this. (Photo below). The kitchen team has asked me to highlight Edie (Y1), who has grown in confidence, and used beautiful manners in the dinner hall. I would like to say well done to all the Reception children who have made farm posters - they are AMAZING - well done! Murray (Y4) came to show me his amazing maths work today - well done! Thank you to Maisie (Y3), Alf (Y3), Matilda (Y3) and Mollie (Y3) for litter picking this week - very much appreciated! Harriet (Y3) continues to show impeccable corridor manners and behaviour, often standing back or holding doors open - thank you. Gracie (Y2) was caring earlier when she asked if I was feeling okay, when I was hobbling. She also checked on me again later! Lydia Lottie, Aaron, Holly D, Emily D, Sophia, Camilla, Norah and Evie from Y2, who helped me and Miss Rutter to carry some things to the shed earlier. Chloe, Eleanor and Maisie (Y5) showed a really sensible approach when they came to clarify homework requirements. Liberty (Y4) and Lilley (Y4) did some wonderful composing on Garage Band - it was a pleasure to listen to.

Lots of special mentions this week!

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend - see you on Monday!

Year 3

What a lovely week – both the weather and year 3 children have been amazing! It meant we could conduct our science investigation into forces (gravity and friction) outdoors. The children worked well in their groups and tested the cars on ramps with different surfaces at varying heights.

In maths, we have been learning about money, converting between pounds and pence and adding and subtracting amounts. This linked nicely to discussing different payment methods in PSHE. Some of our children are racing up the times table mountain – we have a number on gold, and even platinum, now! We do appreciate your support in practising times tables. The children have written persuasively, encouraging visitors to Moulton, and continued to focus on The Iron Man in whole class reading and comprehension.

In DT, the children have learned the tricky skill of applique, in RE about Christian charities and when to use j’ai (I have) and je suis (I am) correctly in French. We finished the week researching jobs in the horse racing industry and how these have changed since the 17th century, when Charles II reinstated the sport, following the death of Oliver Cromwell and the reinstatement of a king to the throne.

Do enjoy the weekend – ice creams all around! The year 3 team.

Year 4

This week we have been busying ourselves, once more, with decimal values. We have confidently divided by 100 and even moved onto formal division. In English, we’ve slowly built up a personal tale around our book, ‘The Widow’s Broom’, which explores ideas of prejudice and misunderstanding. Other than this, we’ve explored Jesus’ word pictures for Christians to be salt and light, finished looking at who was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic and, developed our collage skills by looking at the artist Kurt Schwitters.

Please do keep up all of the hard work with maths targets, practising timetables and, of course, daily reading. Thank you in advance and drop me an email if you have any questions regarding this.

Thanks,

Mr T

Year 5

It’s been lovely to enjoy the sunshine this week. We’ve been able to take two of our English lessons outside to make the most of it! Please make sure your child is wearing sun cream and is bringing a hat to school, so they can safely enjoy this lovely weather.

In English, we have been learning more about some of the main characters in Oliver Twist. We have looked at how Oliver first meets the Artful Dodger and Fagin in turn. We have been acting out these interactions. We definitely have some budding thespians in the room! In maths, we have been learning about decimal and fraction equivalence. We’ve learnt there are some we just need to know (0.5, 0.25. 0.2, 0.75) and there are some we can work out. Next week, we will begin to look at how percentages link to fractions and decimals.

Next week, the Y6s will be sitting their SATs tests, which will mean some changes for the whole school, but for Y5 most of all. Some Y6s will be taking their assessments in our classroom, so Y5 will be spending the first part of the morning in the hall. Upon arriving at school, Y5 should head straight to the hall. I am involved in the administration of the SATs, so Y5 will be left in the capable hands of Mrs Marsh and Mr Coldwell. I am sure you will join me in wishing Y6 lots of luck – they will be brilliant!

Next Friday is a non-uniform day for Mental Health Awareness week. The theme is green or active wear. Y5 will still be swimming and have PE, so the theme fits well! We are not asking for any contributions to this.

Have a wonderful weekend

Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mr Coldwell

Year 6

It's been an intense but very purposeful week this week.

As you would expect, we have been revising the material for SATs.

We are not setting homework for the reasons outlined in the email sent earlier.

Have a super weekend.

Nuala Gilmore

Mental Health Week 13th to 21st May 2024

The theme this year is Movement: Moving more for our Mental Health.

We will be having different lessons to coincide with mental health week.  We would also like the children to "Wear it Green" on Friday 17th May.  To help raise awareness, we would like the children to wear any shade of green, or any other colours that make them feel sporty for the day.

Lost property

In the school office, there are three rather new-looking watches.  There is also a pair of bright blue glasses.  All of these items must belong to a child here. Please do pop into the office if you think any of the items could be your child's.   Thank you
