A message from Mrs Shipp

It has been a lovely sunny week in school, and there has been a lot to celebrate and admire in all the classes.

Monday's Collective Worship focussed on the parable of the Sower and the Seed. The children were beautifully behaved, and engaged well. In particular, thank you to Harvey (Y1), who asked afterwards if Jesus might have spoken about people walking on seeds, which would also stop them growing well. The singing in Tuesday's assembly was wonderful: Mr. Turner played the guitar, and it really did rouse the children. On Friday, Mrs. Gilmore spoke to the children about the summer solstice, and how it is celebrated across the world. They looked at the story, Under the Alaskan Midnight Sun. The Open the Book Team will be in on Monday for Collective Worship - what a treat!

We have had several colleagues from other schools visiting us over the past few weeks, and they have all commented on our pupils' engagement, behaviour and manners - we felt really proud of everyone.

Our reading café was well-attended - thank you so much! Mrs. Manning has added some photos to the website - do have a look.

Thank you to Y6 families for their contributions to the Church raffle - there is still time to contribute next week if you would like to. The village fun day is on Saturday 6th July - hopefully I will see lots of you there!

Thank you so much to the parents who went on the Reception trip to Hunstanton. It was a great day, and we hope that you all had fun! I can imagine that there were lots of tired children that evening.

If your child attends breakfast club, and you would like them to eat with us, please ensure that they are here by 8:15am. For health and safety reasons, we pack away the food and equipment when the hall becomes busier, and the children begin their active play.

Please send your child in with a hat from next week. The weather has hopefully changed, and we want to ensure that children are as hydrated and as cool as possible. If children do not have a hat, and it is sunny, we will ask them to stay in the shade.

Don't forget the karate coaching next week - further details below.

Special Mentions...

Thank you to Isabella (Y1), Harvey (Y1), Hunter (Y1) and Lydia (Y2) for volunteering their time to sweep leaves and make the sandbags for the netball posts - much appreciated! Thank you to Harrison (Y1) who watered all the plants near the office today.  Angie and Leanne from the kitchen told me that they are impressed with Maisie (Y4) for increased confidence and communication; and to Daniel (Y5) for excellent manners - well done to both children. Thank you to Emily D (Y2), who has shown excellent manners and behaviour, whenever I spot her in the corridor. Well done to Harry (Y4) for consistent excellent behaviour in the corridor too. Well done to one of our Y6 boys, who completed a 10K walk to raise money for charity - what a super contribution to the community. (Photo below)

Have a lovely weekend - see you on Monday!

Year 3

Another wonderful week of learning and behaviour – well done year 3! Please remember to pack a hat for the sun each day, give antihistamine and apply sun cream as required.

The children have impressed us with their understanding of time, focussing on duration, seconds, minutes and hours and units of time. In English, they created some fantastical mythological creatures and completed whole class reading on a healthy balanced diets. Computing saw them programming on animation files; Art, designing Ancient Greek vases; RE, discovering how Nanak became a Guru; and, in French, using the terms ‘C’est qui?’ and ‘aussi’. Miss Rutter made a popular visit and they tested materials for their reflective qualities in Science. We finished the week with a really engaging and interesting discussion about Hippocrates, who he was and why he is know as the ‘father of medicine.’ Well done year 3 - you deserve a cool treat in the sunshine. Have a great weekend! The Year 3 team.

Year 4

This week we have been exploring statistics in a range of ways. In topic, we even looked at data relating to Titanic and some of us created bar graphs. In science, we conducted a chocolate melting experiment. Everything didn’t go quite to plan yet this taught us lots of skills for what we would do next time. Playscripts was our focus in English and we did enjoy reading, acting and writing parts of playscripts in groups. Other than that, we’ve looked for patterns on Scratch games, learnt about cooperation in PSHE and, continued our Covenant learning in R.E. talking about Pesach.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the sunshine.

Year 5

It's been so lovely to have better weather this week. Thank you for sending your children in with hats and wearing sunscreen.

This week in English, the children have been imitating a formal letter of complaint. They were writing about faulty bikes/scooters, really focusing on keeping a formal tone and sticking to the three-part letter structure. I'm sure Mr Coldwell looks forward to reading them. In Maths, we have continued our focus on angles, looking at recognising acute, obtuse, right and reflex angles in shapes and calculating angles on a straight line.

In History, we learnt about some of the diseases that the Victorians suffered from. I played the poor, diseased Victorian and Y5 played the doctor trying to diagnose me! They gave me lots of great, Victorian medical advice, but it didn't improve my chances. A scarf wouldn't help anyone recover from Typhoid!

Next Monday, we will have a PE session with Adam, the Karate coach who has been running our after-school club. Children need to come to school in their PE kit for the day.

Keep remembering those hats, water bottles and sunscreen!

Have a lovely weekend!

Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mr Coldwell

Year 6

There's been an international flavour to our maths lessons this week: we have been learning Chinese, Egyptian, Russian and Japanese methods of multiplication.

In English, we have continued to read Chinese Cinderella - the children have been gripped by this story.

We have been rehearsing -LOTS!

In RE, we have been learning about The Eightfold Path in Buddhism.

In art, the children have been learning about street art.

Next Monday, we are welcoming staff from Newmarket Academy to meet with me, and they will also meet with the children who are going to be attending from September. If your child is due to go to Newmarket Academy , I have suggested that they spend some time thinking of questions they might have which they would like to ask.

Have a super weekend.

Nuala Gilmore
