A Message From Mrs Shipp

Our penultimate week of this half-term has come to a close! Don't forget that next Friday is a PD Day - most of our staff will be undertaking First Aid training.

Our well-being team introduced themselves to the children during Monday's assembly. They ran a colouring club for Y1 children later in the day - thank you to the well-being team. On Wednesday, our CWC led a wonderful assembly, talking to the children about how to be respectful in church for our Harvest Festival next week - thank you! On Thursday, Reverend Chris talked to the children about communication: well done to Phoebe (Y1), who identified all of Rev. Chris' communication objects! He shared the message that prayer does not require batteries, phone signal, postage or anything like that - God is available to listen 24/7.

Please could we remind parents and carers to sign up for 2nd /3rd choice lunch options by Sunday evening. We generate a spreadsheet first thing on Monday morning.  The spreadsheet contains a lot of data, which Angie sorts through each week to ensure that children are given the correct lunch. We do not look at the spreadsheet again after Monday, so if you sign up your child late, they will not be given the option that they want. As you can imagine, cooking approximately 150 meals each day, with three different options, adhering to allergy procedures, and remembering who does and does not like beans(!) is a hard task. Please support Angie and the team by signing up on time.

Lots of families attended our Open Morning this week. Our Y6 tour guides did a fantastic job of answering questions and giving our guests a flavour of life at Moulton CEVC.

Thank you to the parents and carers who supported our PTA meeting - we now have a committee, which is fantastic news!

Our new Pupil Absence Request letter is on the website. If you need a printed version, please ask at the office. On the back of the letter is the DfE's information regarding absences and fines.

Special Mentions...

Well done to one of our Y2 pupils, who did brilliantly in a majorette competition - fabulous! (See photo below.) One of our Y4 pupils did a 5K inflatable run - really impressive! (See photo below). Henley (Y4), Alf (Y4) and Barnaby (Y4) were brilliant in my maths lesson this week - super listening and application of skills! One of our Y4 pupils did brilliantly at a recent 'EMA' Elite Majorettes Association competition - well done! (Photo below). Lilley (Y5) has also been successful - she did three dances on stage in Ipswich recently. One of our Y5 pupils finished 3rd at the Suffolk Schools' Area Trial cross country, so has qualified for the finals  - well done! (Photo below)

Have a lovely weekend - see you on Monday!

PTA meeting 17th October

Many thanks to those who came to the PTA meeting yesterday.  It was lovely to see some familiar faces, and to meet our new parents!

The ideas we all spoke about are great, different and are definitely achievable.  Please spread the word about the events coming up.  We are always here for any new ideas you have!

We will also be running a competition for a new PTA logo.  More details to follow.

Girls Football Event Monday 21st October

Please do remember, some of our year 5 and 6 girls have a football event on Monday.  They will need to come to school in their PE kit.  Siblings will be able to leave at 2pm too, unless you have told us they will be staying in school.          Thank you

Year 3

It’s been another busy week. The children have earned a week off handwriting home learning – I suspect some of them might find this a challenge at this point of a long half term.

In English, the children planned and wrote some lovely, evocative Harvest poems. We have begun using the expanded column method for addition in maths and the children have taken this new method in their stride.

We had a great science lesson looking at endo- exo- and hydrostatic skeletons, as well as beginning to learn the names of bones in the human skeleton. In computing, we continued to use loops to draw different shapes using the Pro-bots. In geography, we began researching the physical geography of Italy and Costa Rica, two countries the United Kingdom imports fruit and vegetables from. The children designed healthy, balanced wraps in DT, which they will make on Monday. The children broke their record for the weekly RE quiz with Mrs Chittock – 1 minute 49 seconds! Mrs Grosvenor made a guest appearance and taught PE (she was impressed with the class, so well done Year 3). Miss Spinks and the children discussed what bullying is in PSHE.

Wishing you a lovely, autumnal weekend it has certainly felt like the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ today.

The Year 3 team

Year 4

Another busy week and the children are starting to show signs of fatigue.  Please don't over-tire them this weekend as we have another week of full on learning.  Our reading this week was again better but not enough to even get us third place.  Don't forget, homework is; Maths Targets, Times Tables, EdShed and Reading.  There will be further homework coming soon (make the most of the free time whilst you can!).  One thing that all the children need practice on is speedy mental recall of subtraction below 20, ie: 14 - 6, 19 - 5 etc.  To be able to do this mentally and reasonably quickly will help with the current addition and subtraction unit.  Addition seems to be OK, but they are struggling with Subtraction.

Our Learning this week;

English - We finished planning and started writing our invention text about our Mythical Monster.

Maths - We continued using the expanded column method for addition and subtraction.

Music - The children learnt to sing, and hand jive to, Rock around the clock, ready for moving on to 'Walking the bass' being played on the glockenspiel.

Topic - We looked at how the Anglo-Saxons helped to spread Christianity.

PHSE - Making smart choices surrounding issues around alcohol.  The unit is called; Making choices, based around drugs, tobacco and alcohol.

Computing - Programming ProBots to write letters.

RE - Reading a bible story and identifying where or how the salvation/rescue appears.

Have a lovely weekend, four days to half-term, time is flying so fast!

Mrs Chittock and the Year 4 team

Year 5

We have returned to the top of the Star Reader tree with 100% of the class being a Star Reader last week. This is an amazing achievement that has only happened once before (and that was about 6 years ago!) We will definitely have to commemorate it in some way.

In English this week, we have continued learning about the Roswell UFO. We've thought about how to turn direct speech into reported speech, practiced writing more 'show, don't tell' sentences, planning and written our own account of the Roswell UFO and then found out what actually happened. Next week, we will be finishing off our space unit but writing a non-chronological report about a planet.

In Maths this week, we have been practicing and refining our written method for subtraction. We have tried to be 'conscious' calculators and have been thinking about which is the best method to use before starting. Some calculations can be done mentally, some need jottings and some need a formal written method. We've had a go at solving some tricky missing number addition calculations and even had a go at solving some addition pyramids.

In Science, we recapped Gravity and then used Newton metres to measure how much force is needed to move objects on Earth. We then used some maths to help us work out how much force would be needed to move those objects on the Moon and Jupiter.

Next week, we will have our harvest celebration at Church and two different football tournaments - busy until the end!

Have a super weekend.

Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mrs Nichols

Year 6

It's been a fabulously busy week in Y6 with lots of impressive learning.

  • In English this week, we have been writing an assessment as an entry for a 'Dog of the Year' competition. We have also read  a narrative based on Dulce et Decorum est.

  • In maths, we have been dividing by two digits using factors and being introduced to long division. Long division is often a VERY challenging subject, but Miss Spinks and I are impressed with the progress the children have made. This will continue into next week.

  • In history, we looked at some of the reasons which led to the end of WW1 and categorised them.

  • In Science this week we made pericopes which demonstrate how light travels in straight lines and how it can be reflected by mirrors.

  • In Computing we learnt about how to use variables with a Microbit. This enabled us to code it to be a score card for Rock, Paper, Scissors.

  • In PSJE, we looked at the sensitive topic of homelessness, some of the reasons why this can happen and what it means to be homeless.

  • In French, the children were learning about the names of rooms in the house and were using language to compare these.

  • In RE, we completed an assessment which answered the question 'How does the belief in Incarnation show that Jesus is God incarnate.

Home learning this week:

  • Having checked TTR and seeing little engagement, I am asking that children spend an hour on TTR and Spelling Shed combined. We will be checking their progress on this.

Have a super weekend!

Moulton Park

Moulton Parish Council is hoping to improve the play equipment at the park and would like to hear from children who use it! They have created a questionnaire for families to complete, which you can collect from Moulton Stores from next week. They are hoping to access some funding, and want to know what local children would enjoy at the playground. Thank you.
