A Message From Mrs Shipp

We have embraced the cold this week, but there has definitely been more of a nip in the air! A few children were reluctant to go outside, because they didn't have their hats and gloves. Next week is supposed to be a little warmer, but I expect the frost will be back soon.

In the event of snow, we may need to close the school. This is never an easy decision, as we always strive to stay open. In the past, we’ve been one of only a few schools in the county to remain open during severe weather! However, the safety of our staff and families must come first. We will inform you as soon as possible via text message and our Twitter account. Please keep an eye on these channels for updates. Thank you for your understanding and support. If we are open and it snows, we aim for the children to play outside - please send them with suitable footwear for fun in the snow!

Mr. Turner had a large proportion of our children in Lego Club today, and the Y5 classroom was full to the brim for colouring club earlier in week. TTR and Ed Shed club were popular - staff had to get more iPads! Miss Murphy's Creative Writing club had a good uptake too. It is lovely to see different ages squishing in a classroom and working together so well.

Our JRSOs led Monday's assembly. They talked to the children about National Road Safety Week, and their cake sale. On Wednesday, Mrs. Gilmore spoke about World Children's Day, and the rights of a child. Reverend Chris led Thursday's Collective Worship - he talked about counting and Advent. On Monday, the Open The Book team will be back with the second instalment of the story of Joseph & His Coat.

Breakfast Club from January
Starting in January, our trusted after-school provider, Kids R Us, will also be running our Breakfast Club. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to secure sufficient staff to continue running the club in-house.

The club will operate at the same times and cost as before, with bookings opening on Monday morning. Capacity will remain unchanged, as the sessions will continue to be held in the school hall. To make a booking, please visit the booking page here. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Kids R Us directly at office@kidsrusoosc.com.

Special Mentions...

This week, I was thoroughly impressed by the musical talents of our Year 4 children during their glockenspiel lesson. A special shout-out to Barnaby and Finlay, who showed incredible courage by performing a walking bass line for me and the rest of the class—marvellous work! Some of our Year 1 boys made us proud in their first competitive match last week. Congratulations to Henry H, who was named Player of the Match, as well as Rupert, Joel, and the other boys in the photo below. A big thank you to the dads too! I had the pleasure of chatting with Evelyne (Y6), who shared her insightful thoughts about farming. I learnt so much—thank you! Scarlett (Y6) has really stood out this week! She has been a fantastic help to Mrs. Crook and has shown consistent hard work in class. A brilliant week—well done! I am thrilled to share the success of two of our siblings who performed in the Noye's Fludde concert at Bury Cathedral last Friday and Saturday! We are incredibly proud of them—it was their first time playing in a professional production. (See photo below) Finally, a big well done to Myles (Y1) for his act of kindness in the dinner hall. He noticed a peer sitting alone at a different table and offered to move so they wouldn’t feel left out. Such a thoughtful gesture!

Have a lovely weekend - see you on Monday!

Lunchtime Clubs

The clubs are proving popular at lunchtime.  As the weather gets cooler, some children are not too keen to be outside, so an activity in the classroom is very appealing! There was a huge number of children in Colouring club this week, they were even sitting under the tables at one point!!

Learning Updates

Year 1: Here

Year 2: Here

2nd & 3rd choice School Dinners

Every child in school now has a QR code sticker in their reading record. This is to make the sign-up process easy for all to use.  The link will be removed from the website early each Monday morning. If you do still need the link, it is : Here

Year 3

It’s been another busy week in Year 3 and the children will need a good rest over the weekend, as we still have four weeks to go!

Thank you for supporting the children at home. We are seeing more home learning being completed and, consequently, notable progress in reading book bands, times tables and maths targets. We came third in star reader this week – another improvement!

The children have taken home a copy of their current times tables sheet in their reading records. This sheet is completed in one minute, three times a week in school. Any practise you can do to support the children to increase speed and accuracy would be fantastic!

In English, the volume of writing has stepped up, with the children imitating and innovating a non-chronological report about tigers and elephants respectively in fairly quick succession. We also read an extract as a whole class from The Wild Way Home (our class reader) and answered comprehension questions based on the text. Our maths topic is multiplication and division. This week has focussed on the 3 and 4 times tables. We have also discussed what multiples are (the product of two whole numbers), what the product is (e.g., the product of 5 and 3 is 15) and what the dividend and divisor are in a division number sentence.

The children drew some delightful foxes, using charcoal, in the prehistoric style in Art. They explained the process of fossilisation in detail in science and described how Stone Age shelters changed through the three periods (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic).

Miss Rutter made a guest appearance to teach PE – she would like to see the children improve their listening and participation in this area. Miss Spinks reports that the children made some great contributions when creating a soundscape for an animation. Mrs Chittock explored how Muslims obey Allah, including through the Adhan (call to prayer), and we finished the week focussing on memorisation techniques for the names of animals in French.

Have a super weekend!

The Year 3 Team

Year 4

Well we can tell we are creeping towards C*********s, with the cold weather too the children have been very excitable (already!).

In our learning this week;-

English - we have picture mapped and added actions to our text and written a character description with lots of great description.

Maths - Continuing with multiplication and division using 7 and 9 times tables and perimeter work with Mrs Harper.

Topic - we started to look at King Alfred, Alfred the Great.  We looked at his family tree and talked why there had been so many kings in such a short period of time.

Computing - the children designed a house using SketchUp.

Music - The children perfected then performed to one another the music they had been working on 'Walking the Bass'.  They have done a great job.

DT - The children were planning their book/tablet sleeve.

RE - This week we were talking about The Prophet Muhammed and why he was called the 'seal'.

It was lovely seeing some of you on Tuesday evening at Parent's evening.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Chittock and the team

Year 5

We won Bookster again! I think there have only been 3 weeks so far this year we haven't won which is quite the record.

In English this week, we have been looking at a letter Tostig Godwinson wrote to his big brother to let him know how angry he was about his exile. We read it carefully, really focusing on the letter's tone and inferring things that are hidden between the lines..... In Maths, we have been learning how to short multiply and we have been brilliant. It's been great for this children to see how they can use their times table knowledge.

In History, we arrived at the first battle of 1066 - The Battle of Fulford Gate. This was the battle between Harald Hardrada, Tostig Godwinson and the Northern Earls, Edwin and Morcar. It was a resounding win for the Viking forces, but this isn't the end of the story. In Science, we conducted an experiment testing the absorbency of different materials. Next week, we will tweak our independent variable and have another go at this experiment. In Computing, the children used the laptops to create their pixel picture that they designed last week. They looked really good!

Next Friday, our JRSOs are holding a cake sale. We would love it if you could support us by baking or supplying a cake for them to sell back to you!

Have a super weekend,

Miss Rutter, Mrs Marsh and Mrs Nichols

Year 6

It's been another productive week in Year 6.

In maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of adding and subtracting fractions, including really challenging ourselves with converting fractions and trying really tricky reasons problems.

In English, we are imitating our new text: flashbacks, and we have been revising our understanding of compound sentences, as well as learning and revising new sentence types. We have also been revising the spelling patterns cial andtial and ~ous suffixes. On Spelling Shed, the children have been set prefixes spellings to practise.

In RE, we have been learning about what Tawhid means to Muslims.

In PSHE, we have continued to think about what mental health means and how sometimes, our problems are too big to deal with alone.

In history, we were learning about Chamberlain's appeasement policy and whether or not the children thought that this was a good idea.

Home learning this week is a grammar task and a maths task: the maths task is a consolidation of this week's learning. Both tasks should not take in excess of an hour combined.
