Moulton CEVC Primary School

Writing

At Moulton CEVC Primary School, we teach writing through the Talk for Writing approach, enabling children to become confident, imaginative and skilled writers. This highly effective approach develops children's speaking, listening, reading and writing skills together, helping them to internalise the language, structure and features of different types of writing before creating their own independent pieces.

Our writing curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced from Reception through to Year 6. Children experience a rich range of carefully chosen genres, ensuring they develop the knowledge and skills needed to write successfully for different audiences and purposes. Each unit builds on previous learning, allowing pupils to revisit and strengthen their understanding as they progress through the school.

Alongside this, we have developed a bespoke progression in grammar, punctuation and sentence construction. Rather than teaching grammar in isolation, these skills are carefully woven into our reading and writing curriculum, enabling children to understand how authors use language and to apply increasingly sophisticated sentence structures in their own writing. This carefully constructed approach ensures that pupils continually build on prior learning and develop confidence, accuracy and creativity as writers.

High-quality texts sit at the heart of our writing curriculum, providing rich vocabulary, inspiring ideas and ambitious language for children to explore and emulate. Through discussion, drama, oral rehearsal and shared writing, pupils develop the confidence to communicate their ideas effectively before crafting and refining their own writing.
