Moulton CEVC Primary School

Curriculum

Our curriculum

We believe that an exceptional curriculum does more than teach knowledge and skills - it inspires curiosity, develops character and prepares children to flourish throughout their lives. While our curriculum is firmly rooted in the National Curriculum, it has been carefully designed to reflect our Christian vision, our core values and the needs of our pupils.

Everything we do is underpinned by our three core values of Individuality, Responsibility and Community. These values shape not only what children learn, but also how they learn and who they become. We want every child to leave Moulton CEVC as a confident, compassionate and resilient young person, equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to make a positive difference in the world.

Through our curriculum, we aim for every child to:

  • Develop a genuine love of learning.

  • Play an active role in their education.

  • Feel safe to take risks, make mistakes and learn from them.

  • Feel valued, recognised and celebrated for their unique talents.

  • Take increasing responsibility for their learning and actions.

  • Make meaningful connections across different subjects.

  • Develop confidence, resilience and independence.

  • Understand their role as responsible citizens in Modern Britain and the wider world.

  • Leave Moulton CEVC fully prepared for the next stage of their education and excited about the opportunities ahead.

We recognise that children learn best when new knowledge builds on what they already know. Our curriculum has been carefully sequenced to revisit and strengthen previous learning, helping pupils develop a deep and lasting understanding over time.

In every classroom, you will find a dedicated 'Do You Remember?' library, stocked with high-quality books linked to topics and themes that pupils have studied in previous year groups. These books encourage children to revisit and consolidate their prior learning, helping important knowledge to move into their long-term memory. They also inspire curiosity, prompting pupils to make connections between different subjects and ask thoughtful questions about what they have learned before. By regularly revisiting previous learning through engaging texts, our pupils strengthen their understanding, develop greater confidence and build a rich body of knowledge that supports future learning. These libraries reflect our belief that learning is not about remembering something for a term or a test, but about developing knowledge that lasts a lifetime.

As well as ensuring that children master the National Curriculum, we carefully consider the knowledge and understanding that will benefit them as they move on to secondary school and beyond. Our curriculum is deliberately designed so that important concepts are introduced in an age-appropriate way and then revisited and developed over time, giving pupils a strong foundation for future learning.

One example of this is our Modernising Medicine curriculum thread. In Reception, children begin by learning about the people who help to keep us healthy, such as doctors, dentists, nurses and paramedics. In Year 1, they discover the remarkable work of Florence Nightingale and the importance of improving patient care. By Year 3, pupils explore the ideas of influential figures such as Hippocrates and Galen, developing an understanding of how medical knowledge has changed over time. In Year 5, they build on this further by studying pioneers including John Snow and Louis Pasteur, learning how scientific discovery and innovation have transformed medicine.

Many of our pupils go on to study the history of medicine at GCSE, and they often tell us how familiar these significant people and ideas already are. By carefully sequencing learning throughout primary school, we ensure that children leave Moulton CEVC with a rich body of knowledge, giving them confidence and a valuable head start as they continue their education.

To help children make meaningful connections across their learning, our curriculum is woven together through four overarching themes that reflect our values and encourage pupils to think deeply about themselves, others and the world around them:

Leaders Through Time

Children explore the lives and achievements of significant local, national and global figures, considering how courage, determination, innovation and service have shaped communities and changed lives. Pupils reflect on positive role models, develop their own leadership qualities and consider the legacy they wish to leave through both their actions and their digital presence.

Changing Communities

Children investigate how communities evolve over time, exploring the impact of people, technology and significant events. They compare communities across different places and periods in history while developing an understanding of belonging, diversity, teamwork and shared responsibility. Pupils also recognise that communities exist within their classroom, village, country and the wider global community.

Modernising Medicine

Children discover how scientific discoveries, medical advances and pioneering individuals have transformed lives throughout history. Alongside this, they develop an understanding of physical health, mental wellbeing and healthy lifestyles, recognising the importance of caring for themselves and others while being inspired to make positive contributions to society.

Ethics and Citizenship

Children are encouraged to think critically about important issues, both past and present. They learn to debate respectfully, evaluate evidence, consider different viewpoints and communicate their opinions thoughtfully and compassionately. Through these experiences, pupils develop the confidence to become informed, responsible and active citizens.

Children in our Reception class follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, where learning is carefully planned through the seven areas of learning and development, providing the strong foundations children need for future success.

From Year 1 to Year 6, our curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum for England, encompassing English, Mathematics, Science, Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Languages, Music, Physical Education, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), Religious Education (RE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).

Above all, our curriculum is designed to nurture the whole child. We want every pupil to leave Moulton CEVC with not only excellent academic foundations, but also the confidence, compassion, resilience and aspiration to lead happy, successful and purposeful lives.
