Early years foundation stage

When children begin their journey at our school, they join our welcoming and nurturing Reception class, where every child is valued as a unique individual. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, which is built around seven areas of learning and development: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design.

Our Reception curriculum is carefully designed to be both challenging and engaging, fostering a lifelong love of learning from the very beginning. We place great importance on developing the whole child, recognising that children thrive when they feel happy, safe and confident. By building warm, trusting relationships and creating a stimulating, language-rich environment, we ensure that every child is ready to learn and flourish.

Learning is driven by children's natural curiosity and combines carefully planned adult-led teaching with guided play and child-initiated exploration. Through stories, conversation, imaginative play and hands-on experiences, children develop the knowledge, vocabulary and skills that provide the strong foundations for future success.

We recognise that every child learns and develops at their own pace. By working in close partnership with parents and carers, we ensure that each child's first experience of school is positive, enjoyable and tailored to their individual needs, helping them to grow in confidence, independence and resilience as they begin their learning journey.

SCIENCE

Our science curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, but every unit and lesson is carefully planned by our teachers to meet the needs of our pupils. Learning is thoughtfully sequenced so that children continually build on their previous knowledge and develop an increasingly secure understanding of scientific concepts over time.

We believe that science should inspire curiosity about the world around us. Through practical investigations, first-hand experiences and purposeful enquiry, children are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, test ideas and think like scientists. Lessons provide opportunities for pupils to observe closely, gather evidence, identify patterns, draw conclusions and communicate their findings using accurate scientific vocabulary.

Alongside developing scientific knowledge, we place great importance on developing pupils' scientific thinking and enquiry skills. Children learn how to plan and carry out fair tests, use scientific equipment safely and accurately, interpret results and explain their reasoning. They also explore how scientific discoveries have shaped our world and recognise the important role that science plays in everyday life.

Throughout their learning, pupils are taught to:

  • use a range of scientific equipment and techniques safely and effectively;

  • ask thoughtful questions and carry out enquiries;

  • make careful observations and record their findings accurately;

  • communicate their ideas and conclusions using appropriate scientific vocabulary;

  • apply their scientific knowledge to real-life situations;

  • understand the importance of working safely and responsibly when investigating living things, materials and the wider environment.

Our aim is to develop curious, resilient learners who leave Moulton with a strong understanding of science and the confidence to continue exploring and questioning the world around them.

COMPUTING

Our computing curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with lessons carefully planned by our teachers to meet the needs of our pupils. As technology continues to shape the world around us, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become creative, responsible and safe users of technology.

Children develop their understanding of computer science, information technology and digital literacy through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning. They learn to use a wide range of software, applications and digital tools while applying their computing skills across the curriculum.

We are fortunate to have excellent technology resources to support teaching and learning. Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 each have access to their own iPad, enabling technology to be used seamlessly within daily lessons, whilst being mindful of screen time. In Year 1 to Year 3, children benefit from a ratio of approximately one iPad between two pupils, encouraging collaboration while ensuring regular access to digital learning. In addition, we have sets of laptops available across the school, and every classroom is equipped with an interactive SMART Board to enhance teaching through high-quality modelling, collaboration and interactive learning experiences.

Online safety is at the heart of our computing curriculum and our commitment to safeguarding. Children learn how to stay safe, respectful and responsible online, developing an understanding of digital footprints, privacy, cyberbullying, misinformation and the importance of making positive choices when using technology. Online safety is taught regularly throughout the year and is also revisited within each curriculum topic, ensuring that pupils develop the knowledge and confidence to navigate the digital world safely.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC as a confident, capable and responsible digital citizen, well-prepared for the increasing role that technology plays in education, work and everyday life.

HISTORY

History

Our history curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with learning carefully planned by our teachers to provide a rich, engaging and well-sequenced journey through the past. Our bespoke curriculum enables pupils to build on previous learning, making meaningful connections between different periods of history and developing an increasingly secure understanding of chronology.

Through our Leaders Through Time curriculum thread, pupils explore the lives of significant individuals whose ideas, courage and leadership have shaped communities locally, nationally and globally. Alongside this, children investigate everyday life in different periods, major historical events, local history and ancient civilisations, helping them understand how the past has influenced the world we live in today.

Throughout their learning, pupils are encouraged to think like historians. They ask thoughtful questions, examine a range of historical sources, evaluate evidence, compare different interpretations and develop their own informed opinions. They learn that history is not simply about remembering dates and events, but about understanding change, recognising cause and consequence, and appreciating the experiences of people from different times and cultures.

Our history curriculum encourages curiosity, critical thinking and reflection, helping pupils develop a greater understanding of their own heritage while inspiring them to consider the impact that individuals can have on shaping the future.

GEOGRAPHY

Our geography curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with lessons carefully planned by our teachers to inspire curiosity about the world and develop a deep understanding of both the local area and the wider global community. Our bespoke curriculum builds progressively on prior learning, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections between places, people and environments.

Through our Changing Communities curriculum thread, children explore how places change over time and how physical and human geography shape the communities in which we live. They investigate the relationships between people and the environment while developing an appreciation of the diversity, beauty and interconnectedness of our world.

We make full use of our village and local area as an extension of the classroom, alongside a range of educational visits and fieldwork opportunities. These first-hand experiences enable children to observe, investigate, collect data and apply their geographical knowledge in meaningful contexts.

Throughout their learning, pupils develop key geographical skills, including map reading, fieldwork, geographical enquiry and the interpretation of data. They are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions about the world, consider environmental challenges and reflect on how they can make a positive contribution to both their local community and the wider world.

Our geography curriculum helps children to become informed, responsible global citizens who understand the importance of caring for the environment and respecting the diverse communities that make up our world.

MUSIC

We believe that music is an important part of a broad and balanced education. It enriches school life, nurtures creativity, develops confidence and brings our community together through shared experiences. Our music curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with a bespoke programme of learning designed by our teachers and enhanced through selected units from Kapow Primary.

From Reception onwards, children are encouraged to sing, listen, compose, perform and appraise music. Lessons are carefully sequenced to develop musical knowledge and skills over time, enabling pupils to grow in confidence as performers while developing an appreciation of a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions.

Singing is a much-loved part of life at Moulton CEVC. Every week, the whole school comes together for a singing assembly, where children develop their vocal skills, learn new songs and experience the joy of making music together. Throughout the year, pupils perform in productions and church services, giving them regular opportunities to perform with confidence and pride.

We place great value on enriching our music curriculum through memorable first-hand experiences. Pupils benefit from a wide range of musical opportunities, including drumming workshops, performances by professional musicians, Playground Proms and other live musical events that inspire children and broaden their understanding of music beyond the classroom.

Children in Year 4 and above have the opportunity to learn a woodwind instrument through specialist peripatetic music tuition, developing their musical skills with the support of experienced instrumental teachers.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC with a love of music, an appreciation of its power to bring people together and the confidence to participate in musical experiences throughout their lives.

Please see the documents below for our Music Development Plan.

ART and DESIGN

Our art and design curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with learning carefully planned by our teachers to develop creativity, imagination and technical skill. We believe that every child is an artist, and we encourage pupils to express their individuality while developing confidence in their own creative abilities.

Children explore a wide range of artistic techniques, materials and media, including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, clay, textiles and mixed media. As they progress through the school, they develop their knowledge and understanding of colour, line, pattern, texture, form and composition, building upon previous learning and refining their practical skills.

Our curriculum introduces pupils to the work of a diverse range of artists, designers and craftspeople from different periods, cultures and traditions. Children learn to observe carefully, discuss artistic styles, evaluate their own work and that of others, and understand how art reflects and influences the world around us.

We value the creative process as much as the finished outcome. Pupils are encouraged to experiment, take risks, solve problems and reflect on their work, recognising that creativity often develops through perseverance and resilience. Through art, children learn to communicate ideas, celebrate their individuality and develop an appreciation of the richness and diversity of artistic expression.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC with a lifelong appreciation of art and creativity, alongside the confidence to explore and express their own ideas in imaginative and meaningful ways.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Our design and technology curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with learning carefully planned by our teachers to develop creativity, problem-solving and practical skills. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children build on previous learning and apply knowledge from a range of subjects, including science, mathematics, computing and art.

Design and technology is a highly practical subject that encourages pupils to think like designers and engineers. Children are given opportunities to investigate existing products, generate creative ideas, design for a purpose, select appropriate materials and tools, and create high-quality products that solve real-life problems.

Throughout the design process, pupils are encouraged to evaluate and refine their work, considering what has worked well and how their designs could be improved. They develop resilience by recognising that successful design often involves testing, adapting and improving ideas before reaching a final outcome.

Children learn to work safely with a wide range of materials, components and tools while developing practical skills in areas such as construction, textiles, mechanisms, food technology and electrical systems. Wherever possible, learning is linked to other areas of the curriculum, enabling pupils to apply their knowledge in meaningful and purposeful contexts.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC as a creative, resourceful and reflective designer who has the confidence to solve problems, think innovatively and take pride in creating products of which they can be proud.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PE)

Our physical education curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, with lessons carefully planned by our teachers to develop pupils' physical competence, confidence and enjoyment of sport. We believe that being physically active is fundamental to both physical and emotional well-being, helping children to develop healthy lifestyles, resilience, teamwork and self-confidence.

Our PE curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop their skills across a wide range of activities, including games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and swimming. Lessons are carefully sequenced to build on previous learning, enabling every child to make excellent progress regardless of their starting point.

We are proud to provide an extensive programme of extra-curricular sport. A wide variety of sports clubs run throughout the week, giving pupils regular opportunities to discover new interests, develop existing talents and enjoy being active with their friends. We encourage as many children as possible to participate, recognising that sport plays an important role in developing confidence, perseverance, leadership and a sense of belonging.

Children also have the opportunity to represent the school in a wide range of intra-school and inter-school competitions throughout the year. We are proud of the enthusiasm, teamwork, determination and sportsmanship our pupils demonstrate, and we celebrate participation and personal achievement alongside competitive success.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC with the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead an active, healthy lifestyle and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

PERSONAL, SOCIAL and HEALTH EDUCATION (PSHE)

Our PSHE curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and resources from the Cambridgeshire PSHE Service, as well as wider statutory guidance, with lessons carefully planned by our teachers to meet the needs of our pupils and our community. We believe that PSHE is fundamental to helping children become kind, confident, responsible and resilient individuals who are well-prepared for life beyond primary school.

Our curriculum supports pupils' emotional well-being alongside their personal, social and moral development. We teach children how to build positive relationships, manage their emotions, make informed choices and develop healthy lifestyles. By helping children understand themselves and others, we equip them with the skills they need to thrive both in school and in the wider world.

Throughout their time at Moulton CEVC, pupils are encouraged to:

  • value their own achievements and recognise the strengths of others;

  • develop confidence, resilience and a positive sense of self-worth;

  • understand how to keep themselves physically and mentally healthy;

  • build respectful, caring and inclusive relationships;

  • appreciate and celebrate diversity, respecting people from all backgrounds, cultures and beliefs;

  • make responsible decisions and understand the consequences of their actions;

  • contribute positively to their school, local community and wider society;

  • understand democracy, fairness and the importance of active citizenship.

Our PSHE curriculum is closely linked to our core values of Individuality, Responsibility and Community. It helps children understand what it means to be a good friend, a thoughtful classmate, a responsible citizen and a compassionate human being. Through carefully planned lessons, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and everyday experiences, we encourage our pupils to show empathy, integrity, kindness and respect in everything they do.

Our aim is for every child to leave Moulton CEVC not only with the knowledge to make safe and healthy choices, but also with the character, confidence and values to make a positive difference to the lives of others.

SEX and RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION (SRE)

At Moulton CEVC Primary School, Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) is taught through our science and PSHE curriculum in line with statutory guidance from the Department for Education. Our carefully planned, age-appropriate curriculum helps children develop the knowledge, understanding and values they need to build healthy relationships, respect themselves and others, and make safe, informed choices as they grow.

Throughout their primary education, pupils learn about friendships, families, kindness, respect, personal safety, physical and mental health, online relationships, puberty and the changes that occur as children grow older. Lessons are delivered sensitively and appropriately, creating a safe environment where children feel confident to ask questions, challenge stereotypes and develop an understanding of the importance of empathy, dignity and mutual respect.

We recognise that parents and carers are a child's first educators and believe that working in partnership with families is essential. Parents are welcome to view our RSHE curriculum and resources or discuss any aspect of the programme with the school.

Under current legislation, Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory in all primary schools, and parents do not have the right to withdraw their child from these aspects of the curriculum. Parents do have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from the non-statutory sex education elements of the curriculum, where these are taught beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum for Science. Requests should be made in writing to Mrs Shipp, who will be happy to discuss the curriculum and answer any questions.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (RE)

At Moulton CEVC Primary School, Religious Education is a valued and important part of our curriculum and reflects our identity as a Church of England school within the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Our RE curriculum is based on The Emmanuel Project, which we have carefully adapted and enriched to deepen pupils' knowledge, understanding and critical thinking, ensuring learning is ambitious, engaging and relevant to our children.

Our curriculum enables pupils to develop a secure understanding of Christianity while also learning about a range of other world religions and worldviews. Through carefully planned lessons, pupils explore beliefs, values, traditions and practices, encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions, reflect on their own views and develop respect for those whose beliefs and experiences may differ from their own.

RE is closely linked to our daily Collective Worship and our Christian vision. Through stories, discussion, reflection and enquiry, children are encouraged to consider questions of meaning, purpose, morality and identity, while developing the values of Individuality, Responsibility and Community that underpin life at Moulton CEVC.

As a Church school, we aim to deepen pupils' understanding of faith while fostering curiosity, compassion and respect. We want children to leave Moulton CEVC with the confidence to discuss beliefs thoughtfully, appreciate diversity and make positive contributions to an increasingly multicultural and multi-faith society.

Parents have the legal right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of Religious Education and collective worship, and we recognise and respect this right. We are always happy to discuss our RE curriculum with parents/carers and answer any questions they may have so that they have a clear understanding of the nature and purpose of the learning before making their decision.

Any request to withdraw a child from Religious Education should be made to Mrs Shipp. Whilst pupils who are withdrawn will be appropriately supervised during RE lessons, the school is not required to provide alternative teaching or learning activities during this time.

LANGUAGES

At Moulton CEVC Primary School, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum focuses on the teaching of French and is based on the National Curriculum. Lessons are carefully planned to develop pupils' confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, enabling them to communicate with increasing fluency and accuracy as they progress through Key Stage 2.

We use the iLanguage programme to support our teaching, alongside carefully planned lessons that are adapted to meet the needs of our pupils. We are particularly fortunate to have two fluent French speakers within our teaching team, whose expertise enriches our curriculum by ensuring pupils experience authentic pronunciation, natural conversation and a genuine appreciation of the French language and culture.

Our ambition is for pupils to develop the confidence to communicate in French in a range of contexts. By the end of Year 6, children are able to hold simple conversations, deliver short presentations, read age-appropriate texts and write short pieces independently, applying the vocabulary and grammar they have learned.

Wherever possible, we seek opportunities to celebrate French language and culture across the wider curriculum, helping pupils to understand the value of learning another language and developing curiosity about the wider world. We know that studying a modern foreign language strengthens communication skills, develops memory and resilience, and prepares children well for the language learning they will encounter at secondary school and beyond.
