Times Tables
Rapid recall of multiplication and division facts is one of the most important building blocks for success in mathematics. Secure knowledge of times tables underpins so many areas of the curriculum, including written calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra and problem solving. When children know their times tables automatically, they are able to devote more of their thinking to understanding and solving mathematical problems, rather than working out basic facts.
We place a very high priority on developing times table fluency. Fluency is more than simply remembering answers; it is about recalling facts quickly and accurately, recognising patterns and making connections between multiplication and division facts. These skills enable children to work efficiently, confidently and with greater mathematical understanding.
We carefully monitor every child's progress using Times Tables Rock Stars, alongside our own bespoke tracking system - Times Table Mountain. This enables teachers to identify precisely which facts pupils have secured, which require further practice and where additional support or challenge is needed. Our carefully planned approach ensures that every child develops fluency at a pace that is appropriate for them.
Example tracking documents and resources can be found below.
We recommend that the practice sheets are completed in short, regular sessions, ideally with the support of an adult. Little and often is far more effective than occasional longer sessions, and there is no harm at all in revisiting the same sheet more than once to build confidence and automatic recall.
These practice sheets should be used alongside Times Tables Rock Stars, Hit the Button and other online resources to provide a varied and enjoyable approach to learning.
If you are unsure which multiplication facts your child is currently learning, please speak to their class teacher, who will be happy to advise you on the most appropriate next steps.
